Route Summary
The 6-day Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a challenging but rewarding trek that offers a variety of landscapes and excellent views throughout the journey.
Starting on the southern side of the mountain, the route takes you through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the icy summit zone. Each day brings a new environment, making the climb both exciting and diverse. The trail is steeper and more physically demanding compared to other routes, but it rewards climbers with stunning scenery and a strong sense of adventure.
A major highlight is the “climb high, sleep low” approach, which helps with acclimatization and increases summit success. The journey culminates at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where you are rewarded with unforgettable sunrise views above the clouds.
The Machame Route is ideal for adventurous trekkers seeking a scenic, active, and memorable Kilimanjaro experience.

Tour Plan
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Arusha/Moshi. After a short briefing, you will drive for about 2–3 hours to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park’s Machame Gate, passing through scenic countryside, coffee farms, and local villages along the way.
At the gate, you will complete park registration before starting your trek on the famous Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route.” The hike begins in a lush rainforest filled with tall trees, vines, and rich birdlife. The trail is often muddy and slippery, adding a sense of adventure as you make your way deeper into the forest.
Your first day’s walk is a steady climb that allows your body to begin adjusting to altitude while enjoying the beauty of nature. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Machame Camp, where your crew will prepare dinner. You will spend your first night on the mountain, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest and the excitement of the journey ahead.
Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Machame Camp, you will continue your journey on the Machame Route, one of the most scenic paths on Mount Kilimanjaro. The day begins with a steady ascent out of the rainforest, where the vegetation gradually changes and the air becomes cooler and thinner.
As you climb higher, the dense forest gives way to heath and moorland, offering wide views of the surrounding valleys and distant peaks. The trail becomes more open, and on clear days you may catch your first views of Kibo Peak, the summit cone of Kilimanjaro.
The hike is longer and more demanding than Day 1, but the changing landscapes and fresh mountain scenery make it very rewarding. You will enjoy packed lunch along the way before reaching Shira Camp in the afternoon.
At Shira Camp, you will rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night under the open sky on one of the mountain’s ancient lava plateaus, preparing for the next stage of your climb.
Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Shira Camp, you will continue your trek on the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, heading east across the vast Shira Plateau. The trail is open and scenic, offering wide views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes as you gradually gain altitude.
You will ascend steadily toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation located at around 4,600 meters. This section is more demanding due to the higher elevation, but it plays an important role in acclimatization as your body adjusts to thinner air. You will stop here for lunch and a short rest.
In the afternoon, you will descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your acclimatization and improves your chances of summit success. Along the way, enjoy unique vegetation and dramatic scenery, including giant groundsels and senecio plants.
By late afternoon, you will arrive at Barranco Camp, where you will have dinner and overnight rest, surrounded by towering cliffs and stunning mountain views.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Barranco Camp, your trek continues on the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro with one of the most exciting sections of the climb the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks steep from below, it is a non-technical climb that involves some scrambling and offers a thrilling adventure with incredible views.
Once you reach the top of the wall, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic scenery of glaciers, valleys, and the mountain’s rugged landscape. From here, the trail continues with gentle ups and downs across ridges and valleys as you make your way toward Karanga Valley.
The trail then continues through a series of ridges and valleys as you move toward Karanga Valley for a short stop and rest. After lunch, you will proceed with a steady climb into the alpine desert zone, where the scenery becomes more rugged and open, with dramatic views of the summit area.
This is an important acclimatization day as you gain altitude while maintaining a steady pace. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt.
At camp, you will rest, have dinner early, and prepare your gear for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Your most important day begins very early at midnight from Barafu Camp on the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a light snack and final preparation, you will start your slow and steady ascent toward the summit. The trail is steep, cold, and challenging as you climb through loose volcanic scree under a sky full of stars.
After several hours of trekking, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim, where you may witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa. From here, you continue for about one more hour to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is a powerful and unforgettable achievement.
After celebrating and taking photos, you will begin your long descent back through Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp. The lower altitude brings warmer air and relief after the summit effort.
At Mweka Camp, you will enjoy dinner, rest, and reflect on your incredible journey to the Roof of Africa.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Mweka Camp, you will begin your final descent on the Machame Route of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail leads you steadily down through the lush rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and richer with oxygen. Along the way, you may hear birds singing and spot unique forest plants, marking a beautiful contrast to the alpine zone you recently passed.
The descent is mostly gentle but can be slippery in places, so you will move carefully while enjoying your last moments on the mountain. After a few hours of descending, you will arrive at Mweka Gate, where you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate in recognition of your achievement.
Your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. This marks the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure, filled with challenges, success, and lifelong memories of reaching the Roof of Africa.
