Route Summary
The 5-day Marangu Route is one of the most established and comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route” because it is considered the easiest and most direct path to the summit, with well-maintained trails and hut accommodation instead of camping.
The journey begins on the southeastern side of the mountain, passing through lush rainforest filled with rich vegetation and wildlife. As you ascend, the landscape changes gradually from forest to moorland, then to alpine desert, and finally to the icy summit zone. Each day brings a clear progression in scenery and altitude, making the climb both interesting and rewarding.
Unlike other routes, Marangu offers overnight stays in mountain huts, providing more comfort and shelter during the trek. The 5-day itinerary is more challenging than the 6-day version because of faster acclimatization, but it is still a popular choice for climbers seeking a shorter, direct route to the top.
The highlight of the trek is reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where you are rewarded with unforgettable views above the clouds.

Tour Plan
As the sun rises, you will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and begin your journey toward Marangu Village, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. At the park gate, you will complete registration and permit formalities while enjoying the lively atmosphere of trekkers and crews preparing for their climbs.
Your trek then begins through a lush and dense rainforest, where your guide will introduce you to the rich plant life, unique wildlife, and natural beauty of the mountain. The trail can be muddy and slippery in places, so trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended for comfort and stability. As you continue, the path gradually becomes wider, offering scenic views of green hillsides and fresh mountain surroundings.
By afternoon, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, your first stop on the mountain, where you will relax, enjoy dinner, and overnight stay inside the forest zone.
Elevation: 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft (2,720 m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Zone: Rainforest Zone
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you will continue your trek on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, leaving the lush rainforest behind as you ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes more open, offering wide views of the surrounding landscapes and, on clear days, glimpses of Kibo Peak ahead.
Along the way, you may visit the short tour to Maundi Crater, which provides a beautiful panoramic view of the Kenyan plains and the mountain slopes. The vegetation changes noticeably today, with giant heathers and unique alpine plants replacing the dense forest. This gradual change helps your body adjust to higher altitude while enjoying a steady and scenic climb.
The hike is longer than Day 1 but rewarding, with peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air throughout the journey. By afternoon, you will arrive at Horombo Hut, where you will rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night preparing for higher altitude ahead.
Elevation: 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft (3,720 m)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Zone: Heath & Moorland Zone
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will continue your ascent on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, leaving the moorland zone behind as the landscape becomes more dry and rugged. The trail gradually climbs into the alpine desert, where vegetation is sparse and the scenery feels vast and open.
Along the way, you will pass the “Last Water Point” and the iconic Saddle, a wide, barren plateau lying between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This area offers dramatic views and a strong sense of isolation as you approach the higher slopes of the mountain. The air becomes thinner, and the pace is slow and steady to support proper acclimatization.
By afternoon, you will arrive at Kibo Hut, your base camp before the summit attempt. Here, you will rest, hydrate, and enjoy an early dinner while preparing your gear for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft (3,720 m to 4,700 m)
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Zone: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Your summit journey begins just after midnight from Kibo Hut on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a short rest and light snack, you will start a slow and steady ascent in cold and dark conditions. The trail is steep and demanding, crossing loose volcanic scree as you climb toward the crater rim.
After several hours of trekking, you will reach Stella Point (5,756 m) on the rim of the crater. Here, you will take a short rest and, if weather permits, enjoy a spectacular sunrise above the clouds. From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim for about 1–2 more hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa and the ultimate achievement of your climb.
After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, you will begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot meal. Later, you continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner, rest, and overnight recovery after an unforgettable summit day.
Elevation: 15,430 ft → 18,885 ft (Stella Point) → 19,341 ft → 12,205 ft
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
Zone: Arctic to Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin your final descent on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail leads you steadily down through the moorland zone and back into the lush rainforest. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and richer, and the vegetation grows denser, offering a refreshing contrast to the high altitude landscapes of the previous days.
Along the way, you can enjoy your final moments on the mountain, passing familiar paths while reflecting on your successful journey to the summit. The descent is mostly gentle but requires care, especially on slippery sections within the forest.
After several hours of hiking, you will arrive at Marangu Gate, where you will complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate as a proud achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
