Machame Route

The Machame route, also known as the Whiskey route, enjoys immense popularity among both guides and climbers for various reasons. Firstly, it is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, traversing the Southern and Western faces of Kilimanjaro and passing through five distinct climatic zones, including stunning cloud forests in the lower elevations. Moreover, it facilitates effective acclimatization by adhering to the principle of ascending to higher altitudes during the day and descending to lower ones for sleep. This natural acclimatization process contributes to its relatively high success rate compared to the Marangu route, also known as the Coca-Cola trail. Additionally, the Machame route requires one or two extra days compared to Marangu, further enhancing acclimatization and success rates. The option to split the pre-summit day climb allows climbers to rest better before the crucial summit push. Furthermore, descending via a different path adds to the allure of experiencing more of Kilimanjaro’s beauty. However, Machame’s popularity can also lead to overcrowding, and it tends to be more expensive than Marangu, as implied by the Whiskey versus Coca-Cola nomenclature.
